BookStorm is a Nigerian-based initiative that trains and supports established and emerging writers and illustrators to create high-quality children’s books that reflect Nigerian experiences and identities.
We produce picture books for children in two categories: early reader picture books for children aged 4–7 and also books for children aged 8–11 that feature Nigeria characters, settings, and stories children can relate to.
We are supported by a network of local and international partners including the EU, Sterling Bank, Book Buzz Foundation and IBBY Africa.
We generally work with Nigerians aged 21–30 but we are happy to look at stories, story ideas and illustrations from anyone who has an interest in children’s literature—either as writers or illustrators.
We uphold the highest editorial and visual standards with professional editors and illustrators guiding each project.
Writers and illustrators retain their copyrights and are always credited for their work. Should we decide to work with you, our contracts are fair and adhere to international standards. We want creators to be able to make living off their art.
Although we have started with publishing in English, we actively support publishing in Nigerian languages to promote multilingual literacy.
It really depends on the project we are working on. Where relevant, we align our books with the UN Sustainable Development Goals to help children explore topics like equality, environment, and education through stories.
Our training cycles typically run for 10 weeks and can include virtual workshops, assignments, and one-on-one mentorship.
